Almost nobody in BC builds these, and everybody who grew up with one wants one.
A jhoola is a seat on chains — two or three people wide, hung from the ceiling joists or carried on its own freestanding frame. Indoors it goes in the living room or the sunroom; outdoors it wants a covered patio rather than open weather.
The seat is solid hardwood with a shaped back and arms. Hardware is rated marine-grade stainless steel, and we size the chain and the mounting to the actual joists in your house — we come and look before we build, which is not optional on something that holds three adults in the air.
If your ceiling will not carry it, or you are renting, the freestanding frame version solves the problem entirely and can move with you.
Takes cushions or a gaddi. Ships assembled where access allows, otherwise assembled on site at no extra charge.
What every piece comes with
- Solid hardwood throughout — no particle board, no veneer, no photo-printed grain.
- Traditional joinery at the stress points, not screws through end grain.
- Built to your measurements, so it fits the room you actually have.
- Progress photos while it is on the bench.
- Delivered, carried in and assembled across the Lower Mainland. Packaging leaves with us.
- Workmanship guaranteed. If a joint ever moves, we put it right.
About the wood.
The traditional timber is sheesham, which is a protected species under CITES and cannot be
imported reliably or legally without permits on every shipment. We work in solid Canadian
hardwood instead — and the traditional dark stain on red oak gets you within a shade of
what you are remembering, in a piece that is actually built for this climate.
